Florida health officials meet amid fierce debate over childhood vaccination plans
LAKE MARY, Fla. — A meeting of Florida health officials to discuss plans to remove four vaccines from the state’s childhood immunization schedule has turned into an intense debate between state officials and doctors over the science of vaccination.
Dozens of doctors and other health professionals attended a hearing hosted by the state Department of Health to explain why the agency chose to remove vaccines against viruses such as chickenpox, hepatitis B and two other bacterial infections.
Many people present have been warned DOH and state surgeon general Joseph Ladapowho has previously questioned the effectiveness of some vaccines, said they ignored decades of evidence and scientific studies showing the shots were worth the risk to prevent disease. Ladapohowever, said their medical training was less effective in keeping children healthy than a mother’s intuition about her child.
“What bothers me is doctors who dismiss a mother’s intuition. » Ladapo said during the hearing, held at a Lake Mary hotel. “How can you go to medical school and think you know anything about a child’s health? »
