Florida State fires top football recruit Chuck Kennon after felony arrest
Florida State’s top recruit, cornerback Chuck Kennon, was dismissed from the program Tuesday after a high-speed chase with police over the weekend.
Kennon’s Dodge Durango was flagged by an officer for going 79 mph in a 50 mph zone early in the morning Sunday in Tampa, Florida, according to UPI.
During the pursuit, the SUV allegedly reached speeds in excess of 150 mph, ran a red light and collided with a sidewalk.
A flat tire caused the car to stop and a police officer reportedly saw Kennon flee towards a nearby industrial plant.
While searching for the 18-year-old, police found Kennon’s phone in the Durango, and a woman with lacerations on her arm said she left Ybor City with him and asked to get out more than 10 times when he began driving recklessly.
She was handcuffed and detained.
Kennon turned himself in Monday and faces three counts: aggravated fleeing to elude (a second-degree felony), false imprisonment (a third-degree felony) and resisting a police officer without violence (a misdemeanor), according to court records viewed by The Post.
He is currently detained at Falkenburg Road Prison.
On Tuesday, Florida State confirmed to multiple media outlets that Kennon was fired for conduct detrimental to the team. He is no longer on the Seminole roster.
The Sarasota native has played in just one game this season, playing late in a 38-7 win over Virginia on Oct. 3. He recorded no statistics.
The 6-foot-2, 186-pound freshman was the star of Florida State’s 2026 recruiting class. Kennon was the nation’s 51st overall recruit and sixth-best cornerback, according to 247Sports.
He chose the Seminoles over more than three dozen offers, including Texas, Louisville and Texas A&M.
Kennon was Florida State’s highest-ranked defensive back since four-star Charles Lester III in 2024.
The loss of a highly touted recruit adds another blow for Florida State, with head coach Mike Norvell already on the hot seat following a 44-20 blowout loss to Louisville on Friday.
The Seminoles (3-3) face their No. 3 rival, Miami (5-0), on Saturday.
