DETROIT — Ford engine retained its No. 3 sales position in the United States during the third quarter by a narrow margin over Hyundai Motor, which was expected to overtake the Detroit automaker.
Ford announced on Friday a drop in sales of 6.6% year-on-year in the third quarter, to 507,395 light vehicles. This figure excludes its largest heavy-duty trucks, which are classified differently.
That compares with the South Korean automaker, including the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands, which reported a 5.4% increase to 506,200 vehicles in the quarter.
Both companies performed better than expected. A forecast last week from Cox Automotive predicted Hyundai would overtake Ford in quarterly sales for the first time.
Hyundai, including its luxury brand Genesis and sister Kia, have made major inroads in the United States this year. Ford, meanwhile, has struggled with production of its crucial F-Series pickup trucks after two supplier fires last year disrupted production and sales.
