In case you haven’t been paying attention, Fortnite is having a pirate-themed season with One piece crossover content available now.
But the big news is the discovery of a pirate store, which makes the entire item store free for two weeks. If you run as a team, everyone on your team receives the reward.
Just to reiterate: if you discover the Pirate Shop token, then you and your teammates will be able to add all cosmetic items from the Item Shop to your profile for free. This is potentially hundreds of dollars.
There are some restrictions: you cannot gift anything to your friends and you cannot purchase tiers in the Battle Pass. But other than that, everything is up to you.
Following the Pirate Shop’s virality, Fortnite reached its peak with over five million concurrent players across all platforms. This is a big win for the game which hasn’t been as popular as usual lately.
Some speculate that this may be an attempt by the game to retain players once GTA 6 releases later in November. I imagine this is something all live services developers think about.
So how do you access the pirate store? Well, you have to loot the treasure hunt chests (they have a skull on them) and hope that you get extremely lucky. I guess Epic knows how many they are giving away.
I’m surprised something like this hasn’t been attempted in Fortnite before, as the game’s skins are incredibly popular, so unlocking the item shop for lucky winners was always going to bring people back.
