Fortnite is a free-to-play game, but you probably already know that doesn’t mean everything in Fortnite is free – not usually, anyway. But this month, almost everything in Fortnite’s Item Shop will be free for a limited number of players for a limited time.

As part of its new Treasure Hunters mini-season that kicked off on November 1, players can find a rare in-game item that makes everything in the Item Shop free for 14 days, just in time for Epic to combat the loss of players in GTA 6.

The Fortnite Item Shop token grants those who find it something called Pirate Shop Access. Players can find the token in chests during any battle royale round. Things like team size, Build or Zero Build modes, and ranked or unranked matches don’t matter. In fact, playing as a team is very beneficial; if one player finds the item shop token, all of their teammates in that round also get it.

Once found, the Item Shop Token will make almost everything in the Fortnite Shop free for 14 days. It must be used before December 15, 2026, but anyone who finds the token also gets a second token to access the pirate store to use in a future two-week window of their choosing in 2027.

Fortnite's plan to survive GTA 6 finally revealed: make everything free
Fortnite players are going for gold in Epic’s now annual mini-season in November.

Exceptions to gifts include anything purchased with real money, such as V-Bucks and certain skin packs, as well as battle pass tiers. You also can’t claim more than one companion (pets and other small characters that stay with you during rounds), nor can you gift items to other players for free, as you might have guessed.

This may seem like a long list of exceptions, but Fortnite’s item shop has become massive in recent years. With over 100 songs available all the time for $5 each, and dozens of emotes, skins, and other cosmetics released every day, anyone lucky enough to claim a pair of tokens for themselves will find themselves looking at a huge amount of stuff that would have cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars by the end of their two weeks.

This second token is a clever way to extend the hype deeper into the post-GTA 6 world we’re all about to live in starting November 19, since this whole promo is clearly Epic’s way of handling Rockstar’s game. The most formidable threat to Fortnite’s place atop the proverbial video game popularity mountain is almost here. Epic needed something huge to keep players coming back, in November and beyond. It seemed like no collaboration, in-game event, or Fortnite’s usual levers would be big enough on their own. But release everything? That will help, at least.

Along with the hype that comes with any new season and the connection to One Piece, Fortnite’s Battle Royale modes are played by around 2 million players during the day in the United States. This represents approximately four times more players than on average in October. By making it feel like winning the lottery, Epic is cashing in on the hype from Fortnite obsessives, casuals, and brand new players.

Will this be enough to keep the hype going after Rockstar’s upcoming record-breaking debut? For many players, this won’t be the case, but it’s likely that some players will still dedicate time to Fortnite in ways they wouldn’t have before, if only for a round or two before returning to GTA 6.

Anecdotally, I’ll tell you that my son, who loves Fortnite but doesn’t tend to play it every week, spent much of last night researching strategies to find the item shop token and then playing several rounds, rekindling a zeal for the game that he hasn’t had in a few years. He seems determined to maximize his chances of winning one of the prizes for himself.

It’s unclear how many players will win the prize, but until Epic turns off that spigot, he and others like him will be sprinting from chest to chest, hoping one of them will award Fortnite’s unprecedented prize against GTA.
