Four injured after landing accident aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, crew safely recovered

Four personnel injured in landing accident aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) Monday, USNI News has learned.

The crew of the unspecified two-seater aircraft assigned to Carrier Air Wing 3 was safely recovered after ejecting from the aircraft, the Navy said in a statement provided to USNI News.

“At approximately 6:18 p.m. EDT on September 28, an accident occurred during aircraft recovery operations aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) off the coast of Virginia,” the statement read. “Both airmen were safely returned to the ship and are being evaluated by medical personnel. Four personnel on board were also injured in the accident and are receiving medical treatment. A sailor is transported to a Norfolk area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Eisenhower is in the midst of the carrier’s first qualifications after completing its final repair period in July. According to ship observers, the ship departed Naval Base Norfolk, Virginia this afternoon.

Although the service has not identified the lost aircraft, the Navy has two types of two-seat carrier aircraft – the F/A-18F Super Hornet and the EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft – assigned to the air wings. The Navy also uses the two-seat T-45 Goshawk trainer aircraft.
