Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya set to lead Prime Video Fourth wing series, based on the bestselling novel by Rebecca Yarros.

McGregor will play protagonist Violet Sorrengail, with Sakraya playing Xaden Riorson. McGregor recently starred in the Prime Video series We were liars. Sakraya’s recent credits include Those who are about to die and the third season of Netflix One piece.

Prime Video declined to comment.

Yarros’ 2023 New York Times bestseller The Fourth Wing is part of the author’s The Empyrean book series, which also includes episodes Iron Flame (2023) and Onyx Storm (2025). Yarros planned a five-book series and announced that she was writing the fourth book. Titles and release dates for the planned fourth and fifth books have not yet been announced.

The story follows 20-year-old Violet Sorrengail, whose plans for a quiet life are upended when her mother, a military general, orders her to join the brutal Basgiath War College and become one of hundreds of candidates vying to become a dragon rider. Prime Video ordered the series in May after

The book’s synopsis further says: “With fewer dragons willing to bond than the cadets, most would kill Violet to improve their own chances of success. The others would kill her simply because she is her mother’s daughter, like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wing leader in the Rider Quadrant. She will need every advantage her mind can give her just to see the next sunrise. Yet with each passing day, the war outside becomes more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Worse still, Violet begins to suspect that the rulers are hiding a terrible secret.

The story also follows the romance of Violet and Xaden, enemies turned lovers.

Amazon MGM acquired the rights to Yarros’ book series in 2023 and began developing it with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, which has an overall series deal with the studio. Lock and key co-creator Meredith Averill took over as showrunner in September 2025 following the departure of original showrunner Moira Walley-Beckett.

Averill serves as executive producer with Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society; Yarros; Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy and Athena Wickham of Kilter Films; and Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark of Premeditated, sister company of Entangled Publishing. Stefano Agosto, executive vice president of television at Outlier Society, serves as co-EP.
