Get ready to say goodbye to “Futurama.” Again. Hulu has no plans to order additional seasons of Matt Groening’s animated series after the season 14 finale, which is now available to stream.
“The thing about ‘Is Futurama coming to an end?’ Well, we’ve already experienced the ending several times,” Groening told Variety. “We’re making a joke out of it with the season finale. The title is redundant and fatalistic. I think we have a whistling-at-the-graveyard attitude these days because we’ve been in this situation many times before. We have a lot more stories to tell. The showrunners, actors and writers would all like to do more stories and we’ll see. You never know.”
Indeed, the season finale is titled “Final Ending: The Last Conclusion,” which should serve as a pretty fitting finale title if “Futurama” remains in the grave — and Groening isn’t sure that will be the case.
“They can put us in a coffin, they can nail the lid, but they can’t bury us,” says Groening. “We’ll get back up. I guess I’m not too worried.”
This isn’t the first time “Futurama” has found itself in this situation, which is to Groening’s credit. The show originally aired for five seasons on Fox (1999-2003) before being canceled for the first time. Comedy Central revived the series in 2009, continuing it until season 10, before canceling it again in 2013. It would be another ten years before Hulu would revive “Futurama” a second time, where it aired for four more seasons.
Futurama specials will address the series’ ‘unanswered questions’
Even though Hulu isn’t currently planning to order additional seasons of “Futurama,” fans of the sci-fi cartoon won’t go completely hungry. Three “supersized” specials are still set to air, starting with a Christmas-themed episode – featuring the return of everyone’s favorite Robot Santa – in 2027.
Groening is staying tight-lipped about the other two specials, but he does offer this tantalizing tease that should excite fans: “We’ve been on the air forever, since 1999, so there’s more to the overall story arc of the characters,” he told Variety. “Things we hinted at early on have finally come to fruition, and some unanswered questions for true fans will finally be answered. But I can’t really be more specific.”
