Galaxy S27 may skip Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme due to overheating

According to a new report, Samsung’s Galaxy S27 series may not use the latest Snapdragon chipset due to overheating issues.

The Snapdragon vs Exynos debate has existed for years, with Samsung often mixing its two flagship chipset choices, but also occasionally dipping into one or the other. Snapdragon is almost exclusively used in the US, with the last time Samsung fully used Exynos in the US being the Galaxy S6 over a decade ago. This was due to overheating issues with Qualcomm’s flagship chip at the time, and it seems like we’re in a case of déjà vu.

Seoul Economic Daily reports that Samsung has “informed Qualcomm of the overheating issue” with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and is considering Exynos 2700 as an alternative. The report states:

Samsung is in talks with Qualcomm to resolve the heat issue by this month, according to sources. If Qualcomm achieves the required performance, Samsung will adopt Snapdragon as originally planned; otherwise, it will have no choice but to consider the Exynos 2700 as an alternative, weighing performance stability and mass production time.

Qualcomm announced its latest flagship chips in September and the top-of-the-line Elite Extreme Gen 6 features a 2nm process and two 5GHz cores. Qualcomm claims a 13% increase in CPU performance over the Gen 5 chip, a 44% improvement in GPU performance, and improvements in AI processing and power efficiency.

A few phones have already been announced with the chip, including the US-bound Motorola Signature 27, but it’s too early to tell whether overheating issues will become more widespread.

Update: Qualcomm, in a statement sent to 9to5Googlesays the report is “inaccurate.”

Recent reports of thermal issues with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 are inaccurate. We are proud of the innovation and strong momentum behind our next-generation flagship platform and continue to work closely with global OEMs to deliver premium user experiences.
