Westeros is ready to conquer the big screen.
Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest The theatrical release is scheduled for June 1, 2029. Owen Harris directs the film with a screenplay by Beau Willimon, marking the first feature film in the franchise which adapts the film by author George RR Martin. A song of ice and fire fantasy book series.
The studio confirmed the title at CinemaCon earlier this year for the film centered around King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. The actors have not yet been revealed.
A Game of Thrones The film has been discussed for over a decade, with discussions dating back to 2013, two years after the series adaptation of A song of ice and fire premiered on HBO. At the time, Game of Thrones Series co-creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss introduced network executives in a wildly popular program that could culminate in three feature films. The flagship series aired its finale in May 2019.
HBO has two current Game of Thrones series, with Dragon House after airing its third season over the summer, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season two is expected next year.
Harris directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdomswith his other television credits including Ms. Davis And Black mirror. Willimon created House of Cards and was a writer on the Star Wars series Andor.
In 2015, Martin explained why he had previously turned down opportunities for a Game of Thrones film, since he didn’t want to have to remove significant portions of his books. He was also concerned that a film would focus primarily on a character like Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen.
“I didn’t need the money, so I had the power to say the sexiest word in Hollywood: ‘no,'” he said. The South Bank Show at the time.
