Winter is coming to the big screen… in the summer of 2029.
“Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest,” the first film set in the fictional world of Westeros, is scheduled for June 6, 2029. Owen Harris (“The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”) will direct the film from a screenplay by Beau Willimon.
Little is known about the plot of the upcoming film, although the story is said to be about Aegon I, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, and his conquest of Westeros a few centuries before the original “Game of Thrones” television series. Aegon I has never appeared on screen and it is unknown who will play him in this film.
Aegon’s royal family — which ultimately gave birth to the icy blonde Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, as well as several heirs, many of whom were also named Aegon — was the basis of HBO’s two hit spinoff series, “House of the Dragon” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdom.” Based on George RR Martin’s bestselling fantasy novels, “Game of Thrones” ran for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019 and won numerous Emmy Awards.
Harris is executive producer of HBO’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and directed several episodes of the first season. His other directing credits include TV episodes of “Black Mirror,” the 2019 “Twilight Zone” remake and “Brave New World” with Alden Ehrenreich. Willimon was the showrunner of Netflix’s “House of Cards” and a writer on Disney+’s hit “Star Wars” series, “Andor.”
While “Game of Thrones” fans wait for “Aegon’s Conquest” to hit the big screen, they can get their fill of fantasy drama with “House of the Dragon,” which is getting a fourth season, while “A Knight of the Seven Kingdom,” which has been renewed for season 2.
