Gas Price Calculator Shows How Far Your Money Goes
Gasoline is up 34.2% year over year, and our new calculator shows how far your money is going at the pump right now.
NEW YORK —
Gas prices have risen sharply since the start of the war between the United States and Iran in February.
Consumers are seeing it at the pump, where the average price of regular gasoline in September was $4.36, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
So how has this affected how much gas your money can buy?
The Get the Facts Data team created a gas price calculator that shows how this year’s price changes affect the number of gallons your money buys at the pump.
It calculates how many gallons your money can buy based on the EIA average price of regular gasoline nationwide for that month.
Enter how much you normally spend at the pump and use the slider to see how many gallons that money would have bought before.
Inflation also plays a role in gas accessibility
The latest September inflation data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed the gasoline index up 34.2% year-over-year. The 9.1 percent rise in the gasoline index accounts for more than half of the monthly increase for all items, the BLS said in its report.
Inflation worsened last month to 3.7% year-on-year, as the ongoing war between the United States and Iran keeps oil prices high.
