Gov. Brian Kemp suspended Georgia’s fuel tax for 30 days on Monday, as the war with Iran sends gasoline prices soaring and voters pressure leaders to ease the strain on household budgets ahead of the November election.
The governor’s order takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday and suspends the state’s tax of 33 cents per gallon on gasoline and about 37 cents per gallon on diesel. That rift is expected to cost the state about $200 million a month, which Kemp is likely to offset by dipping further into Georgia’s surplus.
“Over the past several years, with the help of our partners in the General Assembly, we have been able to provide billions of dollars in aid to hardworking Georgians. » Kemp said in a press release. “We have remained committed to helping them and our small businesses through difficult times, and that is why I am taking this action today to provide additional relief.”
