German police have arrested a suspect after a fire ravaged the Eagle’s Nest, Adolf Hitler’s famous Nazi-era mountain retreat in Bavaria, sparking a nighttime emergency operation involving around 200 firefighters.
No injuries were reported in the building, known locally as Kehlsteinhaus. Police said investigators were examining whether a “suspicious person” in custody was linked to the fire.

The fire alarm was triggered by a smoke detector on Friday around 9:50 p.m. (19:50 GMT). Emergency crews could see flames rising above the building as they approached and found it “completely on fire,” according to police.
The retreat’s remote alpine location, at an altitude of more than 1,800 meters (about 6,000 feet), complicated efforts to put out the fire, police spokeswoman Lisa Maier said.
Although authorities have not announced a cause, German media reported that investigators suspected arson.
The Bild newspaper said emergency responders encountered a motorcyclist heading towards them as they drove to the scene and he was later arrested. His possible involvement was still under investigation.
Maier said investigations were continuing and police were planning a news conference later Saturday.
Built between 1937 and 1938, this stone and granite refuge stands on Kehlstein Mountain above Obersalzberg, near Berchtesgaden, in southern Germany.
Designed as a monument to Hitler’s reign and a reception setting for foreign diplomats, it offers stunning views of the Bavarian Alps. Hitler himself visited the station.
The site, still part of the legacy of Nazi Germany, survived World War II intact. It has operated as a restaurant since 1952 and also houses an exhibition on Nazi history.
