German youth plan French-style mass protests
“Gen Z regelt” – or Gen Z’s Got It – a youth initiative, called for mass protests in 21 cities across Germany on Saturday, October 31; including Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and Munich.
Thousands of people are expected to take part in demonstrations to protest “broken schools and austerity”, as well as the cost of living, social injustice, military conscription and climate change.
The French protests that erupted into violence and widespread destruction of private and public property this weekend also grew out of student frustration with the national school system and quickly involved numerous unions, groups and individuals expressing their anger on a number of issues.
The Gen Z regelt website clearly states that the initiative is “against all violence,” whether directed against people or property.
The police say they are “vigilant and relaxed”, adding that they intend to protect the right of citizens to assemble and express their opinions.
Yet images of massive damage and public violence in France, Italy and Spain have sparked concern among national policymakers and police, who have warned against allowing protests to be hijacked by left-wing extremists.
Andreas Roßkopf, head of the German federal police union GdP, made clear that police officers would deal harshly with riots and rioters, telling the Rhine post According to the daily, “the State, but also the federal police, will offer a firm and decisive response” to any problem.
Roßkopf also warned that radicals and extremists could insert themselves among the protesters to “attack the police” or “just be destructive.”
