GLP-1 users report more nail detachment

GLP-1 drugs could do more than reduce waist size. A first international survey presented at a major dermatology conference found that people taking drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide were about four times more likely to report that their nails were pulling away from the nail bed than similar patients who had never used the drugs – 39% versus 9%, Medical Daily reports. Overall, two-thirds of the 575 GLP-1 users studied reported at least one nail problem, as well as more nail discoloration (46% versus 17% of nonusers, a group that included 1,329 people who had type 2 diabetes and/or obesity but had never taken the medication).

Dermatologists stress that the results are early and cannot prove that medications are to blame; Rapid weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, and underlying conditions can all play a role. “Our results show a clear association,” says study author Dr. Charles Taïeb, “but they also highlight an important point: not everything that happens during GLP-1 treatment is necessarily caused by the treatment itself.” But the higher rate of nail problems “does not appear to be explained by weight loss alone,” according to a press release from the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. The researchers’ bottom line: Don’t abandon a working GLP-1 prescription because of nail or hair changes, but discuss new symptoms with your doctor.
