“Good Morning America” anchor Will Reeve revealed that he was diagnosed with testicular cancer earlier this year.
According to peoplethe 34-year-old son of “Superman” star Christopher Reeve was diagnosed with cancer this spring, which later spread to the lymph nodes in his abdomen. Reeve is now cancer-free after a check-up on September 8.
Reeve was inspired by his parents to share his story with the world. In 1995, when Will was 2 years old, his father was thrown from a horse and left paralyzed from the neck down. He became an advocate for spinal cord injury awareness and research alongside his wife, Dana Reeve, launching the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. Christopher died in 2004 at the age of 52 and Dana died two years later from lung cancer at the age of 44. Will paid tribute to his parents alongside his siblings Matthew and Alexandra in the documentary “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” released in 2024.
“I was raised to share our struggles if by doing so it would help others,” Reeve told People. “Watching my parents up close take the adversity they faced in their lives and turn it into something hopeful has had a major impact on my life and how I try to live it.”
Reeve said he first discovered a lump on one of his testicles in the shower, but “assumed it was nothing or it would go away.” But his wife, Amanda Dubin Reeve, urged him to go to the doctor and get an ultrasound. Cancer was detected and in May the cancerous testicle was removed. Additional tests later revealed that the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes in his abdomen. Reeve then underwent a six-hour surgery in June to remove them and began chemotherapy.
“I have felt so loved, supported and grounded by family, friends and strangers throughout my life,” he added. “And that’s a big part of why I wanted to talk about it. I’ll be fine. But it was a hell of a chapter.”
Although it was difficult, Reeve said the whole experience brought him closer to his late parents.
“The irony was not lost on me: 20 years after my mother died of lung cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering, there I was in the same building being treated for cancer,” Reeve said. “I was living the lives of each of my parents at the same time. Because I had cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering, I had first-hand experience of what my mother had gone through. Simultaneously, I was learning more about what it was like to be my father during the last nine years of his life, where my mother and our family took care of him. And I was there with my wife, who, from the day I met her, reminded me in many ways of my mother, who now plays the role of wife and caregiver.
Reeve said he often went from “Good Morning America” to the hospital for chemotherapy and took a few days off after each session to recover. He completed his final ride on July 31.
“My colleagues at ABC are like family to me and have been with me every step of the way,” he said. “I’m lucky I figured this out early. Yes, I had to jump through fiery obstacles to get to the other side, but it could have been much worse if I had ignored it or delayed my trip to the doctor.”
