God of War Laufey delayed three months to May 2027, as Sony Santa Monica escapes crowded February
God of War Laufey has been delayed. Sony Santa Monica’s PS5 exclusive now avoids the crowded February and will release on May 20, 2027.
Developer Sony Santa Monica announced it was pushing back the upcoming action epic via a brief social media post. Although the studio didn’t give a reason for the delay, it said it was using the extra time to polish Faye’s solo adventure.
“Since God of War Laufey’s reveal in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much enthusiasm for Faye’s journey through Everywhere. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in the studio to create an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans,” the studio wrote.
“With this in mind, we have made the decision to delay the release of God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027,” the statement continued. “We’ll make the most of every moment until then by putting the finishing touches and pushing the game to its full potential. On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and will be back soon to share more updates.”
God of War Laufey is notably the first game in the famous PlayStation series not to feature Kratos in the main role. This time around, Faye takes the lead through a version of the afterlife that’s home to gods and deities from multiple mythologies – and also brings back the faster-paced combat of the original series.
Of course, Kratos will return in future God of War games (he also appears here and there during Faye’s antics), and whatever the next Kratos game is, it will supposedly tie into the events of Laufey, according to the developer.
On the bright side, this delay could be good news for anyone worried about their incredibly large and ever-increasing backlogs. February 2027 is already full of some really exciting games – from the Fable reboot and Persona 4 Revival to Metro 2039. Hopefully Laufey’s delay gives everyone more breathing room.
