Godzilla is back and better than ever as Takashi Yamazaki’s “Godzilla Minus Zero” garners rave early reactions following its press screening at the New York Film Festival. The director’s sequel to the 2023 blockbuster “Godzilla Minus One” wowed journalists with epic thrills and the first R-rated action set pieces in the long-running kaiju franchise. Early reactions from the festival call “Godzilla Minus One” a “breathtaking spectacle” and a “glorious sequel to the first film.”
“A truly epic cinematic feat,” writes journalist Jonathan Sim. “It takes King of the Monsters to a whole new level while remaining grounded in human and emotional issues. A must-see blockbuster that truly delivers on its promises. Unparalleled visual effects, action and scale. Exciting and incredible cinema.”

Film critic Edward Douglas was “completely blown away” by the sequel, while fellow critic Brandon Lewis called the film “an overwhelming achievement in kaiju cinema. Aside from the breathtaking spectacle, Takashi Yamazaki packs in an emotional punch.”
“Godzilla Minus Zero” is the 38th film in the “Godzilla” franchise and the 34th produced by Toho, the Japanese entertainment company behind the creation of the franchise. Yamazaki returns to the director’s chair after the huge success of “Godzilla Minus One,” which grossed $116 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Japanese “Godzilla” film of all time. “Minus One” also won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The sequel stars Kamiki Ryunosuke and Hamabe Minami and marks the first time a Japanese feature film has been made for Imax screens.
According to the official description, “Godzilla Minus Zero” takes place in 1949, “two years after the tumultuous events of “Godzilla Minus One,” and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity. This time around, the Godzilla that causes the rampage is bigger than ever and is heading to New York for a global action epic.
