He’s back, and he’s angrier than ever! Godzilla minus zero had a series of screenings this week for the press and initial reactions have flooded social media. The verdict? We have another kaiju-sized success on our hands.

Despite its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26, legendary Japanese studio Toho held more press screenings this week for Godzilla minus zero ahead of the gala screening of the film Centerpiece at the Tokyo International Film Festival on November 1. The film hits theaters in Japan on November 3 and in North America on November 6.

Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla minus zero is a direct sequel to the Japanese filmmaker’s 2023 epic Godzilla minus onewhich grossed over $100 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $15 million and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2024.

A Toho summary of Godzilla minus zero It reads: “War reduced Japan to nothing, and Godzilla plunged it into the negative. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to recover and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat arises, dashing hope in an instant. There is no third time. It all ends here.”

Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka and Kuranosuke Sasaki are among the returning cast for the sequel. Newcomers include Min Tanaka and Masami Nagasawa.

Filmed entirely in Japan, notably, Godzilla minus zero is the very first Japanese production shot in Imax.

The Hollywood ReporterDavid Rooney’s ‘Rated Godzilla minus zero after seeing it on NYFF, and described the film as a “radioactive explosion”. In a glowing review, Rooney praised Yamazaki for dominating the show in his debut film. “The resulting clash of legendary kaiju is a heartbreaking brawl in a film that never ceases to wow audiences with exhilarating action, then continually outdo itself in the dustups that follow,” Rooney writes. “I’m pretty sure I stopped breathing during a tense scene in which Godzilla crashes into a seaplane attempting a hasty takeoff.”

Godzilla minus zero currently holds a score of 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from 50 reviews. On Metacritic it holds a score of 78 and on Letterboxd it has a 4 star rating.

GODZILLA MINUS ONE: Truly the most epic film I’ve seen all year and it impresses impressively. There are sequences that will leave you speechless.

#GodzillaMinusZero over-delivers! Once again, this is an emotionally charged human story, wrapped in some of the BIGGEST, most satisfying ass-kicking you’ll see this year.

I was able to see this on IMAX 1.90 and I don’t think I’m ready for the full 1.43 experience.… pic.twitter.com/cfCf3L0tFi

I loved #GodzillaMinusZero!

Writer-director Takashi Yamazaki shows genuine love for the series.

It’s a fantastic sequel that once again delivers clever and emotional character moments as well as tense and impressive action explosions.

The score is great.

Watch it on the biggest screen possible! pic.twitter.com/vLICJkN0Q9

I saw #GodzillaMinusZero last night. where Minus One was the Oppenheimer of the Godzilla films, Minus Zero is THE DARK KNIGHT. it’s moving. it’s intense. and it does NOT disappoint on the kaiju action. probably the best Ghidorah ever. The imax experience of the year pic.twitter.com/453nQM4v1q

I went to the Japanese premiere of “Godzilla Minus Zero” at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya. As a huge Godzilla fan and Minami Hamabe fan, this is a film I’ve been looking forward to for three years. And I was able to see it in IMAX!!! There were moments that turned out exactly as I imagined,… pic.twitter.com/wVmY0uhV6S

Godzilla Minus Zero trades some of the emotion and melodrama of the first for pure destruction. Make no mistake, this is an absolute spectacle. From the score to the effects to the monsters, there’s so much to unpack. Absolutely shook me. #GodzillaMinusZero pic.twitter.com/oSpQJZOn7r

#GodzillaMinusZero functions as both a sequel and companion piece to Godzilla Minus One, delivering on the promise of a post-WWII human story in a large-scale monster movie. The film delivers moments of giddy excitement as it builds to thrilling sequences of kaiju action,… pic.twitter.com/4B9xFM3rLo

#GodzillaMinusZero had an awful lot to live up to after Minus One, but by god it did. An entirely different beast, this sequel is packed with fully realized human characters that you really care about, and breathtaking kaiju action that comes to life with some of the… pic.twitter.com/sV6JJwCvcf

#GodzillaMinusZero is the BEST follow-up G-movie to date. The best comparison would be that it is The Godfather Part 2, with Godzilla Minus One’s Godfather. Toho should win another #Oscar for this film. Should be nominated for Best Picture. This Kaiju experience must be seen in IMAX!

#GodzillaMinusZero continues and expands on the characters and themes of the previous film, exploring the different ways people respond to post-war trauma, while featuring incredible kaiju battles. An exhilarating experience in IMAX too. pic.twitter.com/lYH6IF4Yk9

#GodzillaMinusZero is a miraculously satisfying sequel, not only doubling down on the dizzying visual scope, but expanding its emotional vistas and exploring the aftermath of war with the emotional aftershocks, displacements and trauma it brings with it. The decorations… pic.twitter.com/r1KeeIWToW

King Ghidorah looks amazing in #GodzillaMinusZero!! especially in IMAX projection! And every scene in Ghidorah takes place in daylight, we can see it clearly each time from different angles.
