Google announces that Googlebook “detachables” will be available soon

At the Android Dev Summit 2026 earlier this week, Google said Googlebook detachables would be the next form factor after clamshells and convertibles.
This revelation during Wednesday’s developer keynote isn’t particularly surprising given leaks earlier this year. On stage, Google highlighted how Googlebook “spans across all screen formats, from covers, convertibles and soon detachables.”
At launch, four of the five devices are flappers:
The $899 Acer Googlebook 14 is the only convertible with a 2-in-1 form factor that allows for laptop, tent, and tablet modes. Notably, day one limitations suggest Google still has work to do before launching a pure detachable. Although full-screen apps can open in portrait tablet mode, Googlebook OS’s home/desktop screen, overview, and app bar are only available in landscape mode.
The first detachable Googlebook is expected to come from Lenovo. According to a leak from July, the tablet has both a detachable keyboard and a kickstand. There’s even a Glowbar next to the camera. This device leaked alongside a laptop smaller than the current 15-inch model.
With the arrival of Googlebook OS on tablets, a larger question is what operating system high-end Android tablets will use in the future. There should certainly still be room for tablets running Android, but Googlebook OS in theory allows for a more desktop-like experience as the company continues to iterate.
