Google finally launches Gemini 4 Argon

After months of sitting on the sidelines in the race to AI frontiers, Google has finally launched its long-awaited Gemini 4 Argon model, claiming it can compete with the best in the industry.

Google says Argon delivers “cutting-edge reasoning and improved performance in complex workflows,” while reducing the coverage, repetition, and clichés that continue to plague AI chatbots. The company claims that Argon outperforms competing models such as GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5.5 across a range of criteria including coding, cybersecurity, science, finance and law.

Google says it already uses Argon internally, for example to find and patch cybersecurity vulnerabilities, halve the computing power needed to power YouTube’s comments section, and debug the drone physics simulator for Wing, Alphabet’s drone delivery company.

The model is rolling out today to Google’s top-tier Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app and in AI mode in Search, as well as to Ultra subscribers on its Antigravity agent development platform. It’s unclear when – or if – Argon will be available to Plus subscribers or free users.

Google offers very competitive pricing for Argon. The model is launching with an introductory price of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, about a fifth of the cost of OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic’s Fable 5 models. Even after these costs double at the end of November – when the introductory period ends – Argon will still be significantly cheaper than its border rivals on a per-token basis, although this does not necessarily translate into lower costs in practice, as models can use different numbers of tokens for the same tasks.

The launch fills some of the gaps Google left when Google first teased Argon a few weeks ago. In line with other recent versions of the frontier model, the public rollout follows a release limited to a select set of “trusted cyber defenders” to be tested for potential risks.

Argon is Google’s first major release since Gemini 3 in late 2025. In the months since, impressive models from Anthropic and OpenAI have seen Google fall far behind its competitors. Seismic internal upheaval has raised new doubts about the company’s ability – or desire – to reclaim its position and compete on the AI frontier.

But Argon’s arrival suggests we can’t exclude Google from the AI race just yet. Landing just a day after Meta announced its own frontier model, Muse Wonder Full, Argon serves as a reminder of how quickly the balance of power can shift in AI, and that the frontier is far from a two-horse race.
