Google says Chromebook updates will end in 2034 and ‘many’ models will migrate to Googlebook OS

As Googlebook arrives, Google is offering a bit more information about what Chromebook owners can expect in the future.

Google said Chromebook updates would continue into the Googlebook era, while some models would also be eligible for upgrades. On a support page, Google provides a bit more detail.

Starting with Chromebook updates, Google says that “the Chromebooks you own today will continue to receive updates throughout their lifespan,” with all business management and education features remaining in place as well:

We will continue support for current Chromebook devices running ChromeOS, as outlined in our Automatic update policy and the Chromebooks you own today will continue to receive updates throughout their lifespan. Chromebooks remain available today for all school and business deployments.

Your active ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade and ChromeOS Education Upgrade associated with existing devices will remain and maintain their current management capabilities.

Google adds that similar management tools will be available on Googlebook, but they are not yet available. Apparently, they are planned for the second half of 2027. Meanwhile, Google says that “many” existing Chromebook models will be able to upgrade from ChromeOS to Googlebook OS. More details will come “soon”. A later note clarifies that Google is referring to “new Chromebook business models.”

Many of our newer Chromebook devices will be able to upgrade to the Googlebook operating system.. Details on migration paths and device eligibility will be shared soon.

Notably, Google specifies in a later note a year in which ChromeOS updates will end – 2034. Chromebooks whose 10-year update policy extends beyond 2034 will be able to upgrade to Googlebook OS.

ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches until mid-2034. For eligible devices purchased today with a 10-year support lifecycle extending beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting your transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering direct migration paths.

This 2034 date had already been mentioned in a court case as the time when Google would “phase out” ChromeOS.

Finally, when it comes to apps, Google says it is “committed” to web developers despite an increased focus on Android apps on Googlebooks.

Googlebook pre-orders are now open and models will ship in early October.
