According to insider PainkillerQ8, the Rockstar Games team literally forced Sony developers to come up with a resolution upscaling technology called QSSR for the standard PlayStation 5 model. This solution is a specialized method of resolution scaling powered by AI algorithms. The main goal of the implementation is to ensure that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI will deliver high-quality visuals and a stable frame rate on current-gen standard hardware without sacrificing overall performance.
From a technical point of view, the upscaler currently in development works on similar principles to the PSSR system on the PlayStation 5 Pro console. The scale of rendering, complex simulation of the virtual world and increased graphics load in Grand Theft Auto VI place extreme demands on the hardware. Without software upscaling with high-quality detail reconstruction powered by neural networks, launching a project of this scale on a standard platform would result in significant compromises in image clarity.
The initiative to create this feature came from Rockstar Games, which effectively forced the Japanese platform holder to scramble and quickly implement the software tools. Sony itself would hardly have devoted resources to such a complex modification of the base consoles without the strict technical constraints of a large-scale project. Implementing this technology on the original platform is also necessary to protect the global marketing positioning of the PlayStation family consoles’ slogan of providing the best gaming experience.
