Guillermo Del Toro defends “Digger”
Guillermo Del Toro publicly declares his love for “Digger”.
Del Toro spoke to X to denounce opponents of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s film ahead of its release Friday. “A completely meaningless title,” the director wrote in response to a review from Warner Bros. Rated R black comedy. “Like it or not. And yes, I do. The film offers scale, ambition and scope at the theatrical screen level. Bold, daring and cinematically complex. Definitely a theatrical experience.”
Del Toro also reposted other people’s positive reviews, including one praising Tom Cruise’s performance in the film’s lead role.
“It’s funny, I go on the platform and without even scrolling down, these appear at the top of my timeline…” he wrote alongside the repost. “So… I’m just going to keep posting these. Tune in or give up-” In another repost, he wrote: “Dig or die – come on!”
Del Toro also compared the negative reviews of “Digger” to those of “The Big Lebowski,” “The King of Comedy” and “The Counselor,” all of which attracted intense scrutiny upon their release but were later beloved by audiences.
“Digger” is currently only at 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. VarietyChief film critic Owen Gleiberman said that although the film looks like a comedy, it is not actually funny. “I’m not sure ‘Digger’ is going to make the connection, because it’s so full of itself – so heavy with self-importance,” Gleiberman wrote in his review. “The film cost more than $125 million to make, and that figure is not only too high to justify, but it speaks to the arrogance of the filmmakers – to the assumption that many of us will attend this lumbering, absurd conference.”
The film generated just $3.4 million at the domestic box office Friday after a string of negative reviews and divided word of mouth ahead of its release. The film is shaping up to be one of the biggest failures of the year, with estimates of just $7.5 million domestically for its opening weekend.
Cruise also spoke to X on Saturday in support of “Digger,” writing that he was “honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside such talented artists.”
