Alejandro González Iñárritu Excavator left ker-splat on rotten tomatoes and he seems to be grabbing a rather paltry opening weekend box officebut that shouldn’t suggest that some of us aren’t ready to fall for the Tom Cruise vehicle. A champion of the film has emerged in the person of director Guillermo del Toro, who took to call Excavator “a theatrical experience”, a patently true statement that few would dare refute. Del Toro responded to A IGN job promoting his review of the film, which featured a headline the filmmaker called “utterly mean-spirited.”

“The theater experience won’t change your mind. Excavator“, IGN wrote, “and the laughs that are there will still be there when it comes out on HBO Max.” Certainly, a message like this would draw the ire of someone who so ardently defends the theatrical experience, like Del Toro, who publicly described cinemas as “temples of images”. “Like it or not. And yes, I do,” Del Toro posted. “The film delivers cinema screen-level scale, ambition and scope. Bold, daring and cinematically complex.”

As for where THE A.V. Club builds on Iñárritu’s latest capital-C cinematic offering, our film critic Monica Castillo wrote, “In trying to prove his intelligence with various cinematic tricks, substance is once again neglected,” saying that Excavatorthe environmental message of “reached with a ‘duh’.” To the extent that audiences are pressured by critics to see films in theaters (which in itself is quite a conversation), Del Toro underlines that the initially mixed critical reception for notable flops like that of the Coens THE Big Lebowski and that of Martin Scorsese THE King Of Comedy didn’t stop them from being re-evaluated as “masterpieces” and also fought for Ridley Scott’s film. THE Advise while he was there. Del Toro’s point Excavator The pitch, of course, is to encourage audiences to discover for themselves the qualities and flaws of a film, a sentiment we can certainly get behind. “Dig or die – come on!” he posted.
