The Los Angeles Rams are releasing kicker Harrison Mevis and signing Blake Grupe from the New York Jets’ practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.

Mevis, 5’11”, 243 pounds, nicknamed “The Thiccer Kicker,” missed two field goals in his team’s 37-34 overtime home loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. He fired a 50-yard attempt wide left in the first quarter, and Bills linebacker Gregory Rousseau blocked Mevis’ game-winning 48-yard attempt in overtime.

Mevis has made 5 of 9 on field goals this season, including 3 of 6 from 40 to 49 yards. He made all 14 of his extra point attempts.

The 24-year-old made his NFL debut with the Rams on November 9, 2025 after Los Angeles kicker Joshua Karty.

The Rams had some special teams issues last year. It should be noted that their regular season game against the Philadelphia Eagles ended with Philly blocking a game-winning field goal and returning it for a Jordan Davis touchdown in a 33-26 victory.

Karty missed five of 15 field goal attempts and three of 26 extra points. The Rams ultimately waived him. According to head coach Sean McVay to reporters, Los Angeles wanted to keep two kickers but ultimately ran into a “roster management” problem.

The Rams also waived their long snapper, Alex Ward, on November 10.

Mevis did very well for Los Angeles last year, scoring 18 of 19 field goals (including the playoffs) and 23 extra points.

However, this year got off to a rough start and McVay was unhappy with the kicking game.

“In the kicking game, especially with our PAT, the field goal, not even good enough,” McVay told reporters. “It cost us the game tonight.”

McVay had reason to be upset with special teams overall, as Los Angeles also allowed Bills running back Ray Davis to return the opening kickoff 70 yards (Buffalo finished the ensuing drive with a field goal).

Now the Rams are moving to a former Jet (Mevis played with New York in the 2025 preseason before being waived) for the second year in a row.

Grupe played for the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts from 2023 to 2025. He was 86 of 105 field goals (81.9%) and 96 of 98 extra points. He is 19 of 27 from 50-and-over with a long of 60 yards.

The 5’7″, 156-pound Grupe signed a one-year contract with the Colts last March, but was waived on August 30. The Jets claimed him on waivers the next day.

He now has a big chance with the 2-3 Rams, whose talent is certainly better than their track record shows. They will look to move to .500 on Sunday when they host the Arizona Cardinals.
