Here are the mechanics and dozens of new cards from Magic: The Gathering’s Star Trek Set
After a year filled with alternate realities, Ninja Turtles, superheroes, and hobbits, 2026’s latest Magic: The Gathering expansion is going where no Universes Beyond set has gone before, as Star Trek is set to launch in November.
Today, Wizards of the Coast revealed the mechanics players can expect in the expansion, along with dozens of new cards from the core set and pre-constructed Commander decks. We also got a sneak peek at some of the expansion’s special treatments, including the seven cards that will be signed by the people depicted in the artwork.
Here’s everything revealed in today’s Magic: The Gathering Star Trek debut.

The mechanics of MTG Star Trek
Seven new mechanics – including two found only in Commander cards – highlight the expansion, along with an eighth mechanic returning from 2024’s Edge of Eternities.

The first is Teleport mewhich allows you to cast certain spells from your graveyard by returning a creature you control to its owner’s hand and paying a separate cost. The sample map provided is Open communicationswhich normally costs a single blue mana, but you can cast it again from your graveyard by returning a creature to its owner’s hand and paying two generic mana and one blue mana.

Next is Facing a dilemmawhich adds an extra wrinkle to a mechanic that Magic fans know very well. Basically, any time you have to choose a mode in a spell, you’re “faced with a dilemma” and there are cards in Star Trek that will give you extra advantages simply because you made a choice. Seven out of ninefor example, allows you to draw a card each time you have to make a choice on a modal spell.
Star Trek also introduces new modal spells, like enchantment Kobayashi Maru scenario. Each turn after casting this card, you must choose one of the four effects listed on the card, and you cannot choose the same one twice, meaning that if you cannot remove the enchantment after four turns, it is game over.

The next mechanic is Federationwho cares how many creature types among the creatures you control aren’t the Borg (which makes sense, because the Federation and the Borg are like oil and water).
With Captain Jonathan Archerby paying a green mana and tapping Archer, you can give +X/+X to another creature until the end of the turn. As Archer is a human officer and he creates a Dog token, it is at least +3/+3 on the first activation.
Starfleet Academymeanwhile, allows you to pay five generic mana, tap them and choose a color to add one mana of that color for each creature type among the creatures you control. If you have a large pool of varied tokens, this could be a huge source of mana.

Strange new worlds is the next new mechanic, which cares about the lands you control. The more lands with different names you have on the board, the more effective these cards will be.
Deep space analysisfor example, will allow you to draw a card for each differently named land on your side of the table. If you are playing a three-color deck and you have an island, a mountain, and a forest on the board, you have three cards in your hand.
Captain Pike, Fullness of Timemeanwhile, its power and endurance are determined by the number of lands with different names you control. If you’re the type of person who likes to play different non-basic lands in your Commander deck, casting Captain Pike late game could result in a huge creature on the spot.

So far we’ve focused on the good guys’ mechanics, now here’s one for the bad guys. Assimilate allows you to take any creature from a certain area and add it to your battlefield, although it becomes a Borg artifact creature instead of its other types.
Borg Cube allows you to exile any creature on the board when it enters, then when it attacks for the first time, you can add that exiled creature to your board as a Borg. Then, for each subsequent attack, you can repeat the process.

Borg Cube also features the major return mechanic, Edge of Eternities. Spaceship and station mechanic. Several iconic starships from Star Trek history appear on the expansion’s cards, and they all have the Station mechanic, which allows a player to tap a creature in order to add charge counters to the spaceship equal to that creature’s power. Once enough charge counters are added, the spaceship becomes an artifact creature and gains additional abilities.
For example, when three load counters are added to D-7 battlecruiserthis will create a 2/1 Klingon Warrior creature token at the start of combat on your turn. When eight or more counters are added to it, it becomes a 3/3 flying creature.

The last two mechanics are exclusive to the Commander format and only found on cards in pre-constructed Commander decks. The first is Battlefrontwhich grants additional benefits based on the number of opponents you attack during a combat phase.
Worf, Rebel Commander is the face card of the Klingon Fury precon deck, and its Battlefront ability allows you to exile a number of cards from the top of your library equal to the number of opponents you have attacked. Until your next turn, you can play these cards as if they were in your hand.
Now this ability only applies to players you actively attack. Abilities like Myriad, which add tokens to the already attacking board, will not count as a Battlefront ability, so choose wisely.

To research is the other mechanic reserved for commanders, and it gives an additional advantage whenever you draw your second card in a turn, even if the permanent with the ability was not on the field when you drew your first card. Jean-Luc Picard, Lighting is the example card, because it gives a +1/+1 counter to a creature and two charge counters to a spaceship every time you draw your second card in a turn.
Booster Fun treatments
The Star Trek set will have many themed treatments in its product line, and all of them were also featured during the stream.

Each of these cards will bear the authentic signature of the actor who played the character; which means you can grab an autograph from Levar Burton, Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew or William Shatner from a Collector Booster pack, among others.
