Here’s What Reviews Are Saying About Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s Campaign

Here we go! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s campaign is officially available now in Early Access for anyone who pre-ordered the game digitally, which means the first reviews are starting to arrive as well.
The good news here is that most people seem to like it, with the general consensus being that it’s an enjoyable campaign that’s worth playing. Some have even gone so far as to suggest that this is the best CoD campaign in many years!
Let’s take a look at the reviews:
IGN (8/10)
“Modern Warfare 4 made me feel something for the series again. A consistently strong mission set manages to successfully juggle a bloated cast, saying goodbye to familiar faces while building impressive connections with new ones. Its sprawling mission behind enemy lines that borrows most of its ideas from the DMZ mode is a real highlight, as it is every time its blockbuster ambitions are realized and full-throttle battles erupt. “may not have enough to be considered one of Call of Duty’s best campaigns, but if this is going to be the end of this particular saga, then at least Modern Warfare goes out on a high note.”
“Overall, Modern Warfare 4 wraps up the series with several shocking moments and ends on a high note. The pacing never flags despite the two intertwined storylines and alternating POVs, and the wide variety of missions and locations ensure the story remains gripping. Modern Warfare 4 is another thrill-ride adventure. What sets its campaign apart from others is the feeling that the developers had more time to think about the experience to create something that can serve as a worthy conclusion to the Modern Warfare series. For this reason, Modern Warfare 4’s campaign ranks among the best we’ve seen since Modern Warfare 2019.”
“I had a great time with Modern Warfare 4’s ‘popcorn game’ campaign, what with its old-school approach and all. It doesn’t so much integrate open-world and on-rails design as surgically separate them, but sometimes a little old-fashioned is just what’s needed. And for Nintendo gamers, it’s been a while.”
“Modern Warfare 4 is a confident, cinematic shooter that satisfactorily concludes nearly a decade of storytelling. Its spectacular set pieces, strong performances, and surprising moral complexity make it a tough campaign to put down, even when rigid mission design and frustrating restrictions threaten to spoil the fun.”
“It’s a testament to how good this series has been as of late: producing a consistent campaign with over-the-top settings, sumptuous cutscenes, and fundamentally great gunplay is a big win. Without being compromised by the influence of Warzone or Zombies, it’s the first time in too long that Call of Duty’s campaign doesn’t feel like an afterthought.”
“We’re not giving an official rating for the overall game yet. But for the campaign, I’d give it a 4.5 out of 5. I’ll give a real overall rating later. I don’t think the team did a good job of integrating the open-world gameplay into the engaging narrative, and it slowed down the pace of the game. It added hours of potential gameplay for completionists, but it left me wanting more story, cutscenes, and close-quarters combat. Still, I played it and enjoyed what was there, and I enjoyed the risks Infinity Ward took to bring Call of Duty back from the dead.
“For the most part, Modern Warfare’s campaigns tend to be strong. Modern Warfare 4 continues that trend, bringing a fresh perspective with fluid gameplay and mission flow to match. If the quality here is indicative of MW4’s online sequel, we’re in for another great year of COD.”
As you can see, there are some very strong impressions across the board for this campaign, which seems to bode well for a big Call of Duty in 2026. Another great start for a first-party Xbox game this year!
