Historian Mocks Trump’s 250-Foot Defense, Calling It Laughable

As debate intensifies over the proposed 250-foot Donald Trump statue, a fundamental constitutional question remains: Does Congress have the authority to approve such a monument? At the center of the president’s argument is a century-old law that Trump and his allies could invoke to justify the project, although critics dismiss the proposed monument as a vanity project.

The central question is whether a 1925 law gives Trump the authority to build the arch, despite more recent legislation mentioning congressional approval for new monuments in the nation’s capital. The administration argues that Congress already approved the project based on the 1925 law, highlighting an unrealized plan by the Arlington Memorial Bridge Commission of the 1920s, which proposed two tall, narrow columns widely spaced at the west end of a new bridge over the Potomac River. The administration says the proposed arch follows the original vision of that plan.

One historian finds Trump’s argument comical. “The idea that this proposal is somehow justified by what happened in the 1920s and 1930s with the proposals for the bridge — not to be frank, but it just doesn’t pass the laugh test,” David Maloney, state historic preservation officer for the District of Columbia, told the National Park Service in a September meeting recorded as reported by The New York Times.

According to The United States todayin addition to the height of the statue, the entire monument is intended to be extravagant. It would be twice the height of the nearby 99-foot Lincoln Memorial, with two golden eagles sitting atop the arch’s legs and a golden winged figure holding a torch sitting atop it. The arch would stand across the Potomac River, apparently facing the Lincoln Memorial. The development will feature a viewing platform overlooking the surrounding area and will also include a surrounding plaza, granite paving, landscaping, a stone wall and pedestrian crossings with lighting.

Critics have several problems with Trump’s proposed monument: its size and its location. It is planned to sit near Arlington National Cemetery, with opposition from many veterans groups, local advocacy organizations and historic advocates. Trump is being asked to reduce the planned height or choose a different site altogether.

But Trump and his colleagues are fighting back. “The empty Memorial Traffic Circle built in 1940 does not complete the grand project authorized and envisioned by the Arlington Memorial Bridge Commission and by Congress as enacted in the 1925 Act,” Paoletta wrote on X this week. “This is a shame for our nation and its noble veterans.”
