How the 49ers will handle the Brandon Aiyuk situation, according to John Lynch – NBC Sports Bay Area & California
General manager John Lynch and the 49ers faced a difficult situation this week as former wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk reportedly hired agent Drew Rosenhaus and requested reinstatement.
The Aiyuk saga has been reignited, and it’s yet another item added to Lynch’s to-do list less than a week before the NFL trade deadline on November 10.
Lynch, in an interview Thursday with KNBR’s “Murph and Markus,” was asked how he plans to handle this unique situation.
“The way I’m going to characterize it, first of all: We have a 6-1 football team that we think really has a chance in this area this year, so our focus is going to stay on that team,” Lynch said. “(Coach) Kyle (Shanahan) talked about it yesterday.”
Unsurprisingly, Lynch and Shanahan’s goal is to prioritize players in the building and maintain a successful season.
Still, the GM can’t ignore the situation with Aiyuk and how to navigate it. Lynch said he is working with the league to understand the team’s options.
“It’s a unique situation, so there’s really no guide,” Lynch explained. “But I always come back to what is my responsibility, what is my job. My job is to look out for the best interest of the 49ers and as such, and in this particular situation, we are working with the NFL leadership council to navigate a different situation.
“So it’s fluid; I’m going to leave it at that because it was recommended to me and I think it’s the right thing to do. We’ll look for a path here that works for both parties.”
Lynch declined to elaborate on how this navigation would work, but said he would be willing to share more details in the future.
KNBR host Brian Murphy then asked Lynch if all options were on the table, including the possibility of Aiyuk joining the team.
“Yes, of course, I think anything is possible,” Lynch replied. “I will say this: We’ve worked a lot with (Aiyuk’s agent) Drew (Rosenhaus), and Drew is a good guy to deal with. He’s reasonable, he has integrity. So, in terms of that, everything’s good.
“We’ll see how things go; I’ll leave it at that.”
Lynch echoed Shanahan’s response to a similar question the coach received Wednesday, in which he said there were “no absolutes.”
But it is not excluded that a reunion seems highly improbable.
The front office and coaching staff seem pretty aligned in their goal: to maintain their 6-1 record and win their next game against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9.
