How to Help Stop Spam Calls on iPhone and Android
Spam calls should be a concern of the past, but unfortunately, they remain a scourge that many of us face. Services like Truecaller have helped with caller ID and spam filtering for years. But since Android and iOS have become excellent at handling unwanted calls, you don’t need to rely on a third-party app (let alone pay for a subscription) to avoid unwanted callers.
In addition to your phone’s features, your carrier may offer its own spam protection features. Depending on the company, these may be enabled by default. Otherwise, check your online account or carrier app for spam protection.
Filtering unwanted calls on iPhone
If you have an iPhone, go to Settings > Applications > Phone. The most important option is under the Call screening section; enable Spam and calls that your operator identifies as unwanted will not ring. They will automatically be sent to voicemail and in the Phone the app Calls tab, they appear under the tab Spam (accessible under the button at the top right).
To further keep your call logs tidy, enable the option Unknown callers option in the same Settings area. With this, recent calls from non-contacts appear under the Unknown callers section (available via the button mentioned at the top right in the Phone app). To use Mark as known to remove a given number from this section if necessary.
Back on the Settings page, check the Filter unknown callers section, where you have three options. Never is the default, where every incoming call rings normally. The most aggressive approach is Silencewhich cuts all incoming calls from numbers not saved in your contacts and sends them to voicemail. You can view these silenced calls on the same Calls of the Phone application.
Ask the reason for the call is a good middle ground; with this, your iPhone will screen unknown callers and ask them why they are calling. You can view a live transcript of the caller’s response on your screen and decide whether the call is worth answering. Call screening is only available in certain countries on iPhones running iOS 26 or later.
Although you probably already have friends and family saved in your contacts, be sure to save any other numbers that contact you regularly, like doctor’s offices or work clients. These options are great for silencing spammers, but you’ll need to be a little more vigilant to avoid missing legitimate calls from unregistered numbers.
