More than 100 politicians have been invited to state ceremonies on October 23 to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution.
However, in an interview with 444.hu published on Saturday, Magyar said he thought Zelensky’s presence was unlikely, even if Russian President Vladimir Putin had not been invited.
This comes after Magyar and Zelensky said at the EU summit in Brussels on Friday that they could meet again later this year.
“Either I will go to kyiv and from there we will go together to Beregszász, or the president will come to Budapest and from there we will go to Beregszász,” Magyar said.
In a message on X following their meeting in Brussels, the Hungarian prime minister said he had expressed “full solidarity” with Ukraine as it continues to fight the ongoing Russian invasion.
He added that the two agreed to “continue negotiations at ministerial level, with particular emphasis on improving the situation of minorities in both countries” and that they believed it was “in the interests of both countries to build new bases for our political and economic relations.”
Zelensky’s deputy chief of staff told Euronews earlier this week that the Ukrainian leader had been invited to Budapest for the October 23 commemorations, as part of efforts to restore relations between kyiv and Budapest after years of diplomatic disputes that repeatedly hampered Ukraine’s path to EU membership.
“We received an invitation. On October 23, an event will be held to mark the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian revolution,” Zhovkva said. “The Ukrainian president received an invitation to attend. We’ll see.”
