Federal authorities raided the Washington, D.C.-area home of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, on Monday morning as part of a criminal investigation into fraud over her immigration documents filed by her father, Fox News reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.
The Justice Department later confirmed the raid when asked about it by CNBC.
Omar, born in Somalia and brought to the United States as a child, has been the target of criticism from President Donald Trump. She became an American citizen in 2000, at the age of 17.
Homeland Security Investigations, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, conducted the raid, Fox News reported.
The Department of Justice, in a statement to CNBC, when asked about the raid, said: “Today, in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant obtained by the Department of Justice. »
“This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation,” the statement said.
This operation comes less than a month before the November midterm elections. Omar, 44, is seeking another term as representative of Minnesota’s Fifth District.
CNBC asked Omar’s office and the DOJ.
