iOS 27.2 adds a new Messages feature that's already a favorite

Throughout the iOS 27 beta this summer, one of my favorite AI features was a Messages addition that didn’t feel like AI at all: Suggestions.

Here’s what they do, according to Apple:

Messages offers one-click suggestions based on the context of users’ conversations, making it easier than ever to complete tasks, like creating a reminder or note. For example, if someone asks for photos, Messages can also help users find the right photos, recognizing keywords, places and people in their library to find the best options.

Suggestions appear as handy little action buttons below the messages they relate to.

As shown in the image below, if someone asks you to do something, you may see a suggestion to add to reminders or notes. Or if an event is mentioned, the suggestions make it easy to add it to your calendar.

The suggestions worked well for me in the iOS 27 beta, but shortly before the fall public launch, Apple delayed the feature into a “future software update.”

Now in iOS 27.2 beta, suggestions are back. And one way they changed might explain why they were removed in the first place.

As I mentioned, the suggestions worked as expected for me during the summer. But if I had one criticism, it was that they sometimes appeared when the context of the message did not deserve it. Sometimes I’ve seen suggestions to add items to notes, reminders, or the calendar when there was no clear rationale for those recommendations.

But so far at least, in my testing on iOS 27.2, fewer suggestions appear in my Messages conversations. When I see them, it’s always obvious why they’re suggested.

We hope this feature will be available in iOS 27.2 in just a few weeks.
