iPhone 18 Pro Max owners on AT&T got the right treatment, but I think this exposes a bigger problem
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max update stops new cases, not old ones
As we covered When the SOS problem first surfaced, owners started posting in late September on their iPhone 18 Pro Max switch to SOS mode on AT&Twithout calls, texts or data. AT&T acknowledged the problem first and on October 2, Apple confirmed it in an official statement.
We have identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may result in a device losing service and being unable to make calls. We released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and strongly encourage all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to update now, and are also releasing a carrier settings update today. Together, these updates aim to prevent this issue from occurring.
Apple spokesperson, press statement, October 2, 2026
Apple’s own statement is the most reliable source we have here, and it’s carefully written. iOS 27.0.1, released on September 28, and the AT&T The carrier settings update that followed on October 2 are both aimed at preventing new cases. However, neither can restore service to an already affected phone, so these units must be replaced. Apple says it only noticed the problem on the Pro Max on AT&Tand we crossed how to request a replacement through Apple or AT&T.
Why AT&T iPhone 18 Pro Max owners need a whole new phone
Apple hasn’t explained the cause of the problem, and that’s important because the fix tells its own story. A setting or software bug can usually be undone with another update, which is how these things tend to go. When Apple says the only cure is a new phone, I assume something about the affected units is changing in a way that the software can’t achieve. The obvious suspect is the modem. United States iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon iPhone 18 ProTHE The iPhone Duo and Pro Max sold outside the United States all use Apple’s C2. Still, there’s no evidence that the modem is to blame, and Apple hasn’t reported it either.
It’s also useful to know what the two updates delivered by Apple do. An iOS update changes the phone’s software in all areas, while a carrier settings update is a much smaller package that, by Apple’s support page updates network settings to improve connectivity and may add support for features like 5G or Wi-Fi calling.
It installs in less than a minute and you will usually receive a prompt. Both are software, so they can now change the behavior of the phone, which is why Apple shipped them together. What neither can do, by Apple’s own account, is return an already stuck phone to SOS.
We’ve seen iPhone launches fail on carrier networks before, and the pattern is usually the same. THE The iPhone XS faced connectivity complaints in 2018, partly due to a Wi-Fi software bug, the The iPhone 14 Pro struggled with Verizon’s fastest 5G in 2022, and the The iPhone 17 Pro’s cellular issues last year were mostly attributable to software. This is the first time in this series where Apple has stated upfront that the software cannot repair already affected phones.
If you have a iPhone 18 Pro or consider taking a iPhone Duo on October 23, Apple’s statement suggests you are safe, since both use C2 and no other models are known to be affected. Pro Max Owners on Verizon or T-Mobiles aren’t affected either, although Apple hasn’t specified what would happen if one of those phones moved to AT&T later, so install iOS27.0.1 is still a good idea.
As for Galaxy S26 Ultra And Pixel 11 owners enabled AT&TI haven’t found any similar reports. For now, this appears to be related to one iPhone model on a single network.
What iPhone 18 Pro Max owners on AT&T should do now
If you are sure AT&T with a iPhone 18 Pro Maxthe next step depends on whether the service is available on your phone. Owners of other carriers and anyone with a iPhone 18 model, just keep your software up to date.
Here’s how to protect or replace your iPhone 18 Pro Max
This is the order I would follow, based on what Apple has shared so far:
- If you still have the service, update to iOS27.0.1 by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Look for the Carrier Settings update under Settings > General > About, as it rolls out automatically over 14 days and you can pick it up sooner.
- If your phone is already stuck in SOS mode, contact Apple Support or AT&Tor visit an Apple Store or AT&T store to arrange a replacement, as no update will bring it back.

Apple pulled off the swap and an explanation would finish the job
I’ll give Apple credit where it’s due. The issue was confirmed about a week after reports were received, and it’s replacing affected phones instead of requiring owners to wait for a fix, which is the right way to deal with a $1,299 phone that can’t make calls.
Still, a fix that only works by swapping the phone tells me it’s never just a software bug. It is also one more entry on the list of criticisms that we have already noted against this launch, which is a shame for a phone of our iPhone 18 Pro Max review praised for its bigger battery and real camera controls.
For now, I hope Apple will share what went wrong once its engineers are sure, ideally before the iPhone Duo arrives October 23. The people who go to an Apple Store for a replacement deserve more than a “few”, and I’d personally like to see Apple tell them the whole story.
