iPhone Duo screens reportedly cracking along hinge on launch day
While the iPhone Duo was especially showered with praise on the day of its launch, there was some reviews about the device. Critics are not fans of the FaceTime camera output qualitymany apps have not yet been optimized for Apple’s first foldable device, and there is a new report showing that the inner screen crease at the hinge becomes more visible as users fold and unfold the device over time.
However, just hours after the iPhone Duo’s release, some users are returning home to discover what appears to be a major flaw that makes previous reviews pale in comparison.
The iPhone Duo’s interior screen is cracking from top to bottom across the entire hinge – where the device bends – for some very unlucky day one iPhone Duo users.
It’s not clear exactly what the problem is, but the result seems to be the same every time, according to photos of cracked iPhone Duo screens broadcast on social networks. A large crack appears on the interior screen right along the hinge. Additionally, the cracked hinge causes a pixel issue on the right side of the inner screen, resulting in a bright white line.

Reports of faulty iPhone hinges also don’t appear to be limited to a specific market. While it’s also unclear how widespread the defect is, users from the US to Australia to China have all reported iPhone Duo screens cracked at the hinge.
A Reddit user in Australia shared his customer support experience contacting Apple about his faulty iPhone Duo. By telephone, the company offered to make an express replacement; however, the user should “hold the full cost of the phone”. Apple also couldn’t guarantee a time frame for the replacement to arrive. The user decided to go straight to the Apple Store, where he “apologized and replaced it on the spot with a brand new one.” It appears that Apple may have additional iPhone Duo devices in store as replacements in case something goes wrong.
The Australian Redditor said the crack occurred less than 6 hours after picking up the iPhone Duo and after bending the device less than 20 times.
As MacRumors points out, Apple could seek to collect broken devices to investigate what went wrong and fix the problem when manufacturing iPhone Duo devices in the future.
Consumers should still expect issues and bugs with first-generation devices such as the iPhone Duo. But a huge crack in the middle of the inner screen is definitely an extreme flaw. Apple will no doubt fix the problem for unlucky customers, but it’s definitely a big inconvenience on launch day for first-time iPhone Duo owners.
