Comments Off on iPhone Duo users already see a big crease in the middle of their $2,000 foldable iPhone

Apple’s $2,000 foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, is out just two days ago and people are already seeing big creases in the middle of the screen, and some devices are also cracked in the same specific place.

People were queuing overnight into Apple stores to get this thing, and now we’re seeing photos of obnoxious cracked and wrinkled Duos all over social media. In some cases, phone screens have cracked along the crease, causing a crash. calling it “crackgate.”

“I had my iPhone Duo for about six hours and had probably opened it less than 20 times,” one person said wrote on Reddit’s r/iPhoneDuo. “I was showing it to a friend and as I opened it, I felt something around the internal hinge, under the screen. As I continued to open it, I heard an audible crack and the screen broke along the hinge.”

“How long before you join a crack gang?” someone else wroteposting a photo of their iPhone Duo with a large, uneven ravine in the center of the screen.

Other users report not just a crease, but a bright white line of stuck pixels extending from the center to the outer edge of the screen. iFixit wrote a teardown analysis of the Duo, and speculated that the components around the hinge could be the cause of this particular white line issue: “One possibility is that a central support bar does not retract properly when the phone closes, which could put undue pressure on the screen. Another possibility is the curved rails that guide the movement of the hinge, which rise above the surrounding components during folding and could, in theory, interfere with the screen if they don’t move as planned,” they wrote.

Many people seem happy with their new, wrinkled phone that only cost them two batteries. “Folks, it’s a foldable device. The fold is there. Just enjoy the fact that you have one,” someone said. commented in the photo of the fold of another satisfied customer.

Mac 9to5 reported that most buyers seeing the white line screen issue were able to get a device replacement from Apple. It remains to be seen whether Apple will replace a phone with the centerline crease that everyone is complaining about. Apple did not immediately respond to my request for comment on the plea.

Apple launched the Duo seven years after Samsung’s Galaxy Fold hit the market. This line of phones also has a crease in the middle after long enough use that users say becomes more visible over time. But the wait and hype around the Duo has forced YouTubers and journalists to put this thing to the test. TheCaseTester tested it with 1,000 folds and saw the crease at the end; Tim Pan folded his 11,500 times and saw a similar result. The CNET test with a folder they custom built to test, the Duo just passed 55,000 folds. Journalist Joanna Stern found that after 32,000 folds it felt “about the same.”
