Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days remains on the table, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday, as Tehran and Washington remain at odds over the conditions needed to end the eight-month war.

Iran presented the plan in September after an interim ceasefire failed.

“Our situation is clear and based on the seven-day proposal presented to the United States,” Araghchi said in Baghdad.

“They have shared comments that we are reviewing, but our proposal is still on the table and if there is some honesty from the United States, which there is not, the path forward to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is obvious.”

The battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz remains the sticking point for Iran, while President Donald Trump has asserted that the strait remains open to all but Iran.

The “vast majority” of Iran’s attempted attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz are “unsuccessful” because the main waterway remains open to transit, U.S. Central Command spokesman and U.S. Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins told Fox News Digital this week.

Hawkins spoke after CENTCOM said the GFS Pride, a Singapore-flagged container ship owned by Cyprus, was hit by an Iranian projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday and sank while being towed ashore due to a fire on board the vessel.

“The U.S. military helped provide coordinated protection to thousands of ships that transited safely,” Hawkins said. “This means that approximately 97% of ships that attempted to transit the Strait of Hormuz did so successfully without being hit by an Iranian projectile.

“But let’s be clear. What Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is doing is unjustified, and it is also a failure because it does not achieve its goal of closing the Strait of Hormuz.”

Araghchi said the waterway could reopen within six days if Washington agreed to Iran’s terms, and that peace talks would resume the next day.

The United States insisted from the start that the negotiations focus on Iran’s nuclear program.

Vice President JD Vance previously said Tehran must make a “significant” reduction in its uranium enrichment capacity.

Iran says negotiations should initially focus on reopening the strait, a key global shipping route that carried about a fifth of the world’s trade in oil and liquefied natural gas before the war.

Greg Norman-Diamond of Fox News Digital and Reuters contributed to this report.
