Is Prince William close to his uncle Charles Spencer?

Prince William’s feud with his brother, Prince Harry, has been going on for years, but the next in line to the throne is said to have another rift in his family. Royal sources have revealed one person William would feel “betrayed” by, and it’s not surprising at all.

Thanks to his explosive new memoir about his sister, Princess Diana, Charles Spencer may no longer be on William’s good side. “With Prince William, there’s an added sense of betrayal because it comes from his own uncle,” royal commentator Kinsey Schofield told Page Six on September 29 of Spencer’s new book: Swan song: Diana, my sister.

Spencer certainly ruffled a few feathers in his explosive book, which includes damning allegations against King Charles, then just a prince, and Diana’s relationship. Spencer also wrote about some not-too-flattering articles about the late Queen Elizabeth. He resurrects old royal disagreements and speaks openly about difficult topics from William’s past, which is probably why William isn’t happy.

“Charles Spencer was present at Diana’s funeral and publicly promised that his blood family would protect William and Harry,” Schofield added. “Nearly three decades later, William watches this same uncle reopen some of the most traumatic events of his childhood while making highly damaging allegations against his father.”

One particular incident revolved around Diana’s funeral in 1997, where Spencer wrote about his arguments with Charles over William and Harry walking behind Charles during the funeral procession. “Prince Charles continued his flow of anger, without me interrupting him. Then he stopped,” Spencer wrote in the book, according to the Daily Mail. “I assumed the pause meant an effort to control himself, but then he unleashed on the phone what I always thought was his pent-up contempt for Diana and his horror that the world was so upset by her death. ‘Don’t worry,’ he hissed, ‘we’ll forget her soon enough!'”

Whether or not this actually happened is irrelevant; Either way, the fact that Spencer is bringing this up in 2026 and reopening these wounds is enough to make William feel betrayed.

“I think there is a very real question in William’s orbit about how the resurrection of the controversial private conversations of 1997, the attack on the current king and the reopening of one of the ugliest periods in the family’s history is meant to benefit either of Diana’s sons,” Schofield told the outlet.

The palace had previously declared the book in the name of King Charles. “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, Her Majesty is aware that the pain of brotherly grief can cloud reason, affect judgment, and color memory in ways that others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss,” the statement said, according to NBC News.
