Is the stock market closed on Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples Day?
October 11, 2026, 3:01 p.m. ET
Monday, October 12 will be a normal business day for U.S. stock markets, as markets will not close on Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The US bond market will, however, be closed, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Columbus Day, celebrated on the second Monday in October, has been a federal holiday since 1892 and is celebrated across the country with parades highlighting Italian-American heritage and pride, according to Smithsonian Magazine.
After years of criticism over Columbus’ treatment of Native Americans, former President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation for Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2021, the same date as Columbus Day. Although it is not recognized as a federal holiday, it is in some cities and states.
After Labor Day on September 7, it will be business as usual on Wall Street until the end of November. The next scheduled stock market close will be on Thursday, November 26, Thanksgiving.
