Isaias sets record as last Atlantic hurricane, floods Maryland
MARYLAND (WBFF) — Hurricane Isaias made landfall on the Gulf Coast as a Category 2 hurricane, but has since been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone. Despite reducing its strength, the storm now holds the record for the latest start to the Atlantic season, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
At least four deaths are linked to the storm, the Associated Press reported, including two people killed when trees fell on homes in Florida and Alabama. Forecasters have warned that flooding could extend as far as the Appalachian Mountains.
The Maryland Transit Authority warned that “wet roads will be a problem throughout the day, with periods of heavy rain likely,” in an article on
The administration said Isaias formed on Wednesday, October 7, and is the last first hurricane of the Atlantic season since at least 1905, when the first Atlantic hurricane also formed on October 7. The administration noted that Isaias is also the first Atlantic hurricane in nearly a year; the last being Hurricane Melissa, which formed on October 25, 2025, a little over two months after the formation of the first hurricane of the 2025 season, Hurricane Erin.
