Israel’s Herzog calls UK sanctions ‘grave mistake’, accuses UK of election interference
Israeli President Isaac Herzog accused Britain of interfering in his country’s elections with sanctions he called “unfair and politically motivated,” urging his European allies to talk with Israel before blaming the country.
“I have been very disturbed and offended on behalf of my nation by the sanctions imposed against us by the British government,” Herzog said Thursday in an interview with Axel Springer Global Reporter Network Jan Philipp Burgard. “I think it was a big mistake.”
Earlier this month, the British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced that Great Britain, together with France and Canada, would prohibit trade of goods and certain services from Israeli settlements. Miliband also said the UK would take action against companies and individuals providing services for settlement expansion.
Miliband then said the British government recognized that Palestinians were facing “ethnic cleansing” in parts of the West Bank, adding that “too often the Israeli government has turned a blind eye to this.”
