“It’s a solid report”: the American private sector created 90,000 jobs in September
Hiring in the private sector picked up in September, according to payroll manager ADP, helped by continued strength in areas like education and health care.
Private businesses added 90,000 jobs this month, an improvement from August’s revised 36,000 jobs, according to new data released Wednesday. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expected a gain of 75,000 jobs.
Workers also experienced healthy wage growth, with base pay up 3.2% year-on-year and gross pay up 4.7%. People who changed jobs saw even greater gains.
“This is a strong report,” Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP, said in a statement. “After three months of slowdown, job creation has rebounded and wage growth has remained solid.”
Sectors such as education and health, as well as leisure and hospitality, generated the bulk of job creation. The financial sector, meanwhile, lost 16,000 positions, while jobs in business and professional services fell by 11,000.
ADP’s data, which focuses on private companies, precedes broader data from the Labor Department’s survey of public and private companies on Friday.
