
J. Todd Anderson dies: ‘The Nice Guys’ storyboard artist was 67
J. Todd Anderson, who has worked as a screenwriter on dozens of films The nice guys And The tragedy of Macbeth has Hello, Caesar! And The Ballad of Buster Scruggsdied. He was 67 years old.
Anderson died Thursday at a hospital in Orange County, Calif., after a years-long battle with cancer. The Hollywood Reporter learned.
Born John Todd Anderson in Springfield, Ohio, he began working in Hollywood in the late 1980s. The first film he scripted, 1987 Raising Arizonalaunched a long-running collaboration with filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen.
Since then, he has scripted each of their films, including those from the 1990s. Miller crossing (1990), Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), The lady killers (2004), Real courage (2010), Hello, Caesar! (2016) and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018). He also worked on Ethan Dolls to go (2024) and Honey, don’t do it! (2025) and that of Joël The tragedy of Macbeth (2021).
Anderson has worked with several other A-list writers and stars on projects such as George Clooney’s. Leather heads (2008); Drew Barrymore Whip it (2009); David Lowery The old man and the gun (2018); The dictator (2012), with and co-written by Sacha Baron Cohen; and three photos of Shane Black: The nice guys (2016) with Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, The predator (2018) and Play dirty (2025), with Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield.
His other storyboard credits included Tornado (1989), The Addams Family (1991), Nadja (1994), Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), The Big Bang (2010), Warcraft (2016) and Fool’s paradise (2023).
Anderson has also directed two films, The naked man (1999), which he wrote with Ethan, and My mom (2008), and made on-screen appearances in Fargo, Leather heads, The nice guys And American violence (2017), among other films.
Survivors include his mother, Donna Lou, sister Kimberly and niece Haley.
