James McAvoy reveals which movie earned him ‘crazy’ residuals
James McAvoy gets candid about salary, including the project that paid him “crazy” residuals.
During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor admitted that while his residual income isn’t generally consistent, he can’t say the same about director M. Night Shyamalan’s 2016 film. Divide.
“The only one who really pays me regularly is Divide” he told host Josh Horowitz. “Well, I think it was done for like $6 million or something like that. And let’s say they spent 30 (million dollars) on advertising, and in our first weekend we made 40 (million dollars).
“So we were in profit. So our first residual check came at the end of the first weekend. It was crazy,” McAvoy added.
Divide follows three girls who try to escape after being kidnapped by a man (McAvoy) with 23 distinct diagnosed personalities. He also reprized the role in the 2016 film Glass.
THE Atonement The actor went on to praise Shyamalan, saying he was “super smart in so many ways.”
“What I took away from him was his preparation because you know he made this film and Glass with incredibly modest budgets and was very focused,” he said, adding that the filmmaker maximized his shooting time by “being incredibly well prepared” and “communicating with the crew.”
Even though McAvoy profited from the residuals of Dividehe also admitted that he doesn’t “make too much money from (2008) films Research.”
“You always have a good back end and it’s in your contract, you have a back end here and a back end there. I very rarely see anything of anything,” he added. “You get a few checks here for about a few hundred pounds or sometimes checks for about 25 cents, and you think it literally costs more to post this than it does to check it for me.”
