Jane Doe Texted Cornell’s Brother to Find a ‘Jealous’ Rat Gossiping About Them
The Cornell student accusing seven fraternity brothers of gang-raping her had worked with one of them to try to find the “rat” who was talking about them having sex at a party — saying they needed to “grow up” and be more open-minded about what was happening, according to a new batch of text messages.
Just four days after the Chi Phi fraternity party where the student now claims she was drugged and raped, Jane Doe sent a panicked text message to student Matthew Ingalls claiming “everyone knows” they were having sex, leaving her “incredibly stressed,” messages obtained by TMZ.
Ingalls sympathized after the accuser complained that a “random bitch” told her friends.
“Dude, I have no fucking idea, this shit is incredibly frustrating and I know how quickly nonsense spreads in this school,” responded Ingalls, who later claimed he was the one who was assaulted when he was too drunk to consent.
“This is fan behavior from everyone talking about it. Boring people who have nothing to do with the times,” texted Ingalls, who Doe claims was the instigator of the alleged 2024 gang rape.
Doe said the rumors were “f–king RUINING my life” and that she wanted to sniff out “the rats.”
“My reputation is destroyed and I’m completely ashamed. I’m really angry because so many people shouldn’t know about this and I feel like I know who some of the rats in the room were,” she texted him.
She added that the rumors were not only spreading like wildfire, but were getting “crazier and crazier every day.”
“Stupid bitches like to bark, and the fact that they do it shows that they are jealous of you for a number of reasons,” Ingalls retorted.
“The only shameful thing is how this has spread and how people don’t want to keep quiet – which only makes them look bad,” he added.
Doe agreed that the gossips are “jealous” and threatened to beat up anyone who gave them “bullshit” about what happened while also revealing how “open-minded” she is about sexuality.
“…but also that everyone needs to grow up because sexuality and gender are changing and stuff like that is going to become more common,” she said, while adding that she was “also very open-minded.”
Doe later said she suspected another Cornell fraternity brother she accused of participating in the sexual assault, Jonathan Newell, of having loose lips.
“Jonathan definitely told people. I heard something today and I know he told people,” she texted Ingalls.
Ingalls denied that Newell said anything and suggested that an upper-class man may have spread the word.
Doe responded that a student who confronted her “wouldn’t tell me who she heard it from because it was one of her friends.”
Ingalls apologized and promised that “those idiots will leave and it will be over.”
More than a week later, on Nov. 7, Ingalls told Doe that his ex-girlfriend told him he had now been labeled a sexual assaulter on campus — and asked him if Doe had made the allegations against him.
Doe said she remained a mom, but added that “people are changing the narrative because, like any sexual scenario with a woman and many men, the woman was probably the victim.”
“I know there are rumors that I was gang banged,” she said.
The same day, Doe requested a rape kit from the emergency room and reported the alleged rape to campus police the next day, according to her lawsuit.
Ingalls and Newell were two of seven fraternity brothers named in Doe’s lawsuit who were ultimately expelled from the Ivy League school in Ithaca, New York.
No criminal charges were filed at the time.
