Jason Sudeikis opened up about his nine-year relationship with ex-fiancée Olivia Wilde and how he learned he needed to communicate better with the actress.
The “Ted Lasso” star, who dated the director from 2011 to 2020, got candid about what he would have done differently in their relationship during Sunday’s episode of “Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso.”
“I think it’s just plain and simple communication,” he said. “I could have communicated better about how I felt, how things made me feel (and) how things made me feel.”
“If I have a certain feeling and I don’t talk about it, that doesn’t make it go away,” Sudeikis, 51, continued.
The actor explained that it was “unfair” to assume that someone could be a “mind reader,” adding, “Whether that person is a partner or a boss on ‘SNL’ or an executive producer for a TV show.
He added: “It’s like, ‘How do we convey these ideas faster?’ »
Elsewhere in the interview, Sudeikis was asked if he could understand his breakup with Wilde better now than he did five years ago.
“It’s the old equation of grief, or any variation of it, that it takes half as long as the process itself… to get over something, so if it was a 10-year relationship, five years would be 20/20,” he said, before explaining how he would have communicated better with Wilde.
The “We’re the Millers” star also raved about Wilde, saying she was “very good” at her job.
“I’m thrilled for her and I feel very lucky to be doing what I’m supposed to be doing,” he said. “But going through all of this has allowed me to see when other people are going through something similar.”
Sudeikis and the “Don’t Worry Darling” director began dating in 2011 after meeting at a “Saturday Night Live” party and they got engaged in 2013.
They then welcomed two children: son Otis Alexander, 12, in 2014, and daughter Daisy Josephine, 10, in 2016.
The ex-couple split in 2020 and focused on amicably co-parenting their children.
After the breakup, Sudeikis was romantically involved with Keeley Hazell from 2021 to 2022.
As for Wilde, she dated Harry Styles from 2021 to 2022, followed by actor and former basketball player Dane DiLiegro in 2025. She has since moved on with Casper Jopling.
