
JD Vance announces $150 million for new Alaska power grid transmission line

Vice President JD Vance announced major federal aid to Alaska’s power grid on Monday, providing $150 million under the Defense Production Act (DPA) to develop a major new power line.
Vance announced the move in conjunction with the Department of Energy and the Alaska Energy Authority, with officials saying the network would reduce energy costs for 75 percent of Alaska residents.
The Beluga-Healy transmission project will create a second high-voltage connection between Southcentral and Interior Alaska, officials say.

“And today we take another major step toward realizing that promise of energy dominance, which is why I’m especially pleased to announce the Alaska Rail Belt Project, which will commit $400 million to building your state’s power grid,” Vance said.
“With this project, ladies and gentlemen, the Trump administration will help develop more than 200 miles of new transmission line, reducing costs and strengthening grid reliability for 75 percent of this state’s population,” he said.

The DPA provides $150 million in funding in addition to $268 million in existing non-federal funding.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Tuesday thanked Alaska Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan for his efforts to facilitate the deal.

“This project will support not only the major U.S. military expansion currently underway in Alaska, but also mineral and other resource development critical to our national security,” Wright said in a statement.

President Donald Trump’s administration made numerous uses of the DPA during Trump’s first and second terms.

Earlier this year, the administration used the law to order an oil company to restart its offshore operations in California, saying the move was necessary to address risks of disrupting oil supplies and reduce reliance on foreign crude.
