Jeffery Simmons says calling Caleb Williams ‘Painted Nails’ was ‘just a joke’
New Bears defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons said the nickname given to Caleb Williams two years ago was nothing more than game sense.
Simmons, then with the Titans, jokingly referred to Williams as “Painted Nails” in an interview with NFL Network. He said Friday that he thought Bears fans were “going to crash my Instagram” after this.
Now Simmons, Williams and Bears fans are on the same side after the Tennessee trade.
“I’m a fan of Caleb“said Simmons, via Jason Lieser of Chicago Sun-Times. “Of course, being on the other side and having to play against him, I’m not going to tell him that. I’m going to talk as much as possible.
“But now he’s on my team. Any teammate you ask about me, man, I support my teammate no matter if he’s on the other side of the ball or not. I’ll talk to you the most when you’re in a different color jersey, but when we’re on the same team on Sunday, I go to war for any of my guys in the locker room. I hope Caleb knows that.”
Simmons said he and Williams spoke after a joint practice in August and again Friday morning before the meetings. Williams doesn’t hold the comment against Simmons.
“The nail comments from a few years ago are part of my game, along with the smack talk,” Simmons said. “I don’t know if you’ve heard, but I’m probably one of the best talkers. I talk a lot when I’m on the field. I look forward to being his teammate. We all know what type of player he is.”
